A Brush With Fame

While at the T4G Conference I was able to meet up with Phil Johnson for a few brief moments and had the privilege of meeting Dan Phillips and Frank Turk - the entire Team Pyro minus one.

Dan’s first words to me were something about wishing he had brought along an extra PyroGear t-shirt that he would have given to me in recognition of my high esteem for their PyroGear. He, of course, was wearing one under his unbuttoned plaid shirt. (For what it’s worth, Phil was in a suit and Turk was in some sort of non-descript normal-guy look that I cannot recall even if someone should threaten to tattoo me with the Team Pyro logo.)

I think I surprised the brothers. That was a long time ago that I complained about their stuff. People mature. Since then I have been so blessed by the ministry of Mark Driscoll that I was able to riposte that I would gladly wear the shirt in order to contextualize with their culture.

Surely Team Pyro must be grateful for Driscoll’s influence over me.

On a more serious note: the T4G conference was a great reunion of a brotherhood that has so much in common even though some raise their hands and others are afflicted with the Baptist tendon; even though some baptize babies and others are biblical; even though some dress normally and others wear silly t-shirts. There was still a palpable sense of brotherhood.

Thursday morning, 4/17, I had my own brush with fame. Standing in line at the convention center Starbucks at 7AM, I see the bearded visage of one Pensees scribe holding court from the corner chair. I was the advance scout for our church contingent so was in a rush to get upstairs to line up by the doors. Otherwise, I might have been bold enough to stop by and introduce myself as a frequent reader. Or if not that bold, just to walk by and touch the hem of your garment would have been sufficient.
