We need more men like this woman.

Whatever you may think of this woman’s politics and motives, I think we could use a few more men as manly as she was. She had to know that sooner or later the assassins would succeed. Unlike American politicians who carefully analyze the polls and shape their answers and views accordingly, polls would have revealed to this woman that a significant percentage wanted her dead.
You don’t reason with that. You just stick with your convictions.
I don’t think Bhutto was grandstanding when she said, “I am what the terrorist fear most.” Terrorists fear those that aren’t afraid to die. To be terrorized is a choice. Bhutto chose not to be terrorized. They killed her. But they did not terrorize her.
We need missionaries who cannot be terrorized. We need pastors who cannot be intimidated by death. We need Christians who do not fear those who can harm and kill the body, who live by their own ideals - their God-given ideals - and on their own schedule; who, like Paul, say, “I won’t be thrown out of Lystra by those who stoned me. I’ll walk out.”
We may not agree with the Bhutto ethic, style, and politics. But it wouldn’t hurt to have some leaders like her in our country as well: leaders who live by their ideal and are not intimidated by the opposing idealists. While idealists in the USA may not resort to suicide bombings, it is still a fact of life that you don’t reason with most idealists. You should just stick with your own ideals, ideals that are grounded in bedrock truth.
Whatever you think of the woman, today is a very sad day. Pakistan is a “trembling cup” right now.
What a magnificent time to live! What a time to die!

That is a great message. We need to be willing to live and die for Christ just as this lady was willing to live and die for her cause.
Posted by: Nicholas Z. Cardot at December 28, 2007 06:07 AMNot only the Apostle Paul, but the Lord Jesus Christ lived by his own convictions. He was crucified under Pontus Pilate because He told the truth and admitted Who He Is. If He had compromised and not admitted He Is the Son of God, He might not have been crucified.
O THAT God would give Christians in the US a mind renewed in the scriptures and then give us the courage and boldness to live according to Biblical principles. If we did so, Jesus Christ would be lifted up for many many more to see in our country. There is a strong possibility that our country would return to the Lord.

I have found Piper’s take on suffering and death for the cause of Christ compelling and frightening all at once. The gospel of free grace is surely worth dying for, and your post makes that point very powerfully.
Blessings,
Andrew
