“You Can’t Preach There”

This is disturbing to me on several levels, but I will refrain from commenting on the American “liberation” of Afghanistan and express my deeper concern for the cause of world missions. When states negotiate with states for the freedom of missionary hostages by promising to ban missionary work in that country we have opened ourselves up to a new form of anti-Christian missions hostility that starts even before the missionary has set foot on foreign soil. It is not good for missions when a “Christian” nation says, “You can’t preach there. If you preach there, you’ve broken our law here. I think this is a tragic action by the South Korean government and one that will have long-lasting negative ramifications for missions.

Tragic indeed. But it must be remembered that Christianity is still a minority religion in South Korea; Buddism is still the state religion. While growing at an intense pace, Christianity is only the religion of about 14% of the population. The Buddist government is democratic and thus has a political obligation to defend all its citizens, but a Christian Nation it is not. At least, not yet.
However, true Christians truly sent to Afganistan will find a way to get there…Governments cannot destroy the Church.
