More on “Seeker-Insensitivy”

My article on “Seeker-Insensitive-Movement” provoked more reaction than I expected. So, let me clarify.

First of all, there are a number of good reasons to “hop.” I acknowledged this from the get-go of the article. I affirm it now.

Secondly, there are very good reasons to take a good deal of time in searching out a church. Even at MSBC we encourage people to “date” the church for awhile before they commit. Some people take very, very seriously their church search. Bravo!

Thirdly, I think it is good to be sensitive.

Fourthly, I do not think there is anything necessarily wrong in “transfer” growth. (And I am not ashamed to say I am happy to receive people from other churches in most cases).

Fifthly, I go so far as to think that a family ought to leave a church where they are no longer content with how it is nourishing them. I even go so far as to say that if there is no attraction, no “chemistry,” and no known interfering sin that a family has a legitimate reason to move on.

Sixthly, I think it is good to be sensitive.

Seventhly, I want people to be saved.

Eighthly, I think it is good to be sensitive.

Ninethly, I want the church to grow and I think that it is good to be sensitive.

Tenthly, preaching “take up your cross” will seem insensitive and you had better be willing to do it even when it will make people leave.

Eleventhly, there are too many church-hoppers who are not serious about discipleship. I have merely stated the obvious.

Anything else I was saying seemed obvious to me too. Can’t people realize when there are satirical elements?

Like I really want to start a movement called “seeker-insensitivity.” Puh-leeze.

I don’t know, Pastor. I myself had thoughts that you were secretly wanting to start the seeker-insensitive movement as evidenced by our meeting in a building in the middle of the cornfields with not enough working toilets. But you have truly calmed my fears with the plans for the new building. :-)

Bob, I think you touched a nerve for some of those with bigger churches that a lot of church hoppers flock to, which is probably the reason for all the hubbub.
