In a recent post on forgiveness and my little girl’s dog, Milou (pronounced MEE-lou), I mentioned that I was so angry at the little pup for having soiled right next to me that I nearly re-christened him Brian Mclaren (“heretic”) on the spot. It was the parenthetical “heretic” that irked one reader. Said he,

A good post except for calling McLaren a heretic. I caution you to be careful with your words, Bixby. There are many people who need the edification you bring to the table but can be easily distracted by name-calling (esp. the unsubstantiated variety that you brought forth).

I offer to you some of Brian McLaren’s own statements collected at Thinkerup. Make up your own mind.

What exactly about these quotations makes Brian a heretic?

Heretic - a professed believer who maintains religious opinions contrary to those accepted by his or her church or rejects doctrines prescribed by that church.

Rob, are you serious? Do you not know enough of what the Christian Church has taught throughout the years to not see where McLaren cuts a trail never before seen? Or are you, as I suspect, offended by the strong word “heretic”?

His comments show that he has veered from sound doctrine. As John says, “they went out from us because they were not of us”.
