Preach it!
Here’s one more reason why I like Mark Dever. The man speaks his mind when he thinks it’s necessary. He thinks the Southern Baptists have made a mistake. This is the quote of the week.
Do you know who opposes this practice of Southern Baptist Churches? God in Hebrews 10.
I am personally a fundamentalist who hails, not condemns, the solid servants of God who have determined to stay inside the SBC. (As long as they keep speaking up like this.) I also agree with George Whitefield that it is every preacher’s responsiblity to speak out against the particular sins of his particular church (i.e denomination). Thus, Mark Dever speaks to the sins of his own denomination. May we have courage to speak to the sins of our own “denomination.”

The George Whitefield quote:
It is every minister’s duty to declare against the corruptions of that church to which they belong.
Quoted by Iain H. Murray in Evangelicalism Divided, A Record of Crucial Change in the Years 1950 to 2000, p. 159.
Posted by: bob at August 17, 2006 03:56 PMYou’re exactly right Bob. It’s easy to point out the problems in someone else’s terrain, but hard for some to admit what’s wrong in their own back yard. Great post.

You beat me to the punch…I’ve been wanting to blog on this for a couple of days. There are so many good quotes in the post. My favorite:
Any church with a membership twice its attendance is not and cannot be living up to its responsibilities to care for, nurture, watch over, and disciple its church members.
Posted by: Pat at August 17, 2006 07:01 PMOne of the problems in the Church is discipleship. We get people “saved” maybe even baptized, than what. That is the problem with the modern day church. That is why membership is higher than attendence.
Posted by: Josh at August 18, 2006 07:21 PMRight on, Bob. And right on, Mark!
