You Can’t Fool God

This is the title of a good little book. You Can’t fool God by Peter Jeffery is another good product of Evangelical Press. It’s an easy read. I read its 120 pages in an hour, and I wasn’t rushed. In fact, I was humbled by the seriousness of the message and my inward bent to be lax toward my own sins.

Sin is a denial of the greatest fact about man — namely, that he is made in the image of God. So says Jeffery. Jeffery has an unusual gift for distilling great theological concepts into manageable language. I concur with Iain Murray who is quoted on the back cover of this book as saying,

Peter Jeffrey excels in putting the gospel in plain and arresting terms to the modern individual

True. The subjet is critical too. Good books in contemporary language on sin are few and far between. I think John MacArthur’s The Vanishing Conscience is a classic. I also highly recommend Jim Berg’s work, Changed Into His Image.

But if you want a quick read to prick your own soul and refocus your soul on the seriousness of sin, buy Jeffrey’s little book. If you want a book to use in counseling or discipleship, particularly with people who are not used to reading, this is a good choice. MacArthur and Berg are excellent. But, unfortunately, we live in an increasingly illiterate society. Even MacArthur and Berg seem overwhelming to some of God’s dear children. Jeffrey might not intimidate them as much.

The heart of false Christianity is that it does not take God seriously, and consequently it does not take sin seriously. It is impossible to take sin seriously if God is ignored, and there can be no true Christianity without an awareness of the holiness of God and his attitude to sin.
