The Adoption of Grace and the Grace of Adoption: A Daddy Reflects

May 14, 2006

My dear little Grace,

Yesterday our lives changed forever.

A long time ago God placed you in the heart of your mommy and me. We didn’t know who you were then, but we knew that we wanted you very badly and our lives were knit together with yours. The road to China was a long one for us and at times fraught with difficulties and discouragement, but looking back I am thankful that our love for you was made stronger through those experiences. We loved you so much, before we even knew you, that we would have passed through whatever trials were necessary to reach you.

You are a special gift from God. He chose you for us and we couldn’t be any more pleased. I have only known you for about 24 hours and already I praise Him for allowing me to be your daddy. You are a precious little princess, a little girl that has my full love and affection.

When we came back up to our hotel room from receiving you, we laid you on the bed and as you slept we wept and prayed over you. We told God how thankful and how happy we were with you. We asked Him to shape you and mold you into a godly young lady and that your mommy and daddy—with all our faults and shortcomings—would teach you to know and love Him. Our greatest desire is that He would save you and that your life would be full of joy as you get to know Him and serve Him.

As I type this, you are quietly sleeping in the little crib that was placed in our hotel room. Mommy dressed you in an adorable white little outfit. You are a little angel sleeping there and I can’t wait till you wake up so I can hug and kiss on you.

There is so much ahead of you. New experiences, new sounds, new tastes, new faces, and a new life. As you grow up and as we walk together hand in hand, know that I love you, and will always love you with all my heart.

Your Daddy.

This letter written by my friend, Shannon Brown, reflects Shannon’s undisguised gospel motive in adopting a precious little soul into his family. I personally love his motivation. Shouldn’t this always be our motive? I love the story too.
