Yikes (and exultations). Well, at least you don’t have to feel constrained to alert the “school marms and church ladies” {sic.} about this one. Take away creativity, and we uncreative females wouldn’t even know what we’re missing, would we?
Besides, we gals would be devout (if mindless) fans of Bro. MacArthur, no matter what he let slip about his views on creativity. We already know what he thinks about us. He speaks our language, after all. None of that caustic, irony-laden mumbo-jumbo.
With a smile as always,
and, yes, even a wink,

is this a positive quote or a send up?
how can someone have no regard for creativity?!!
Posted by: Andrew Hamilton at April 29, 2006 05:19 AMI post it with a smile, enjoying the irony. In context, MacArthur how he studies hard every week because he really desires to be fresh. However, he is not interested in the message of the Bible being changed. That was his point. That is OBVIOUSLY an assertion I agree with one thousand percent.
On the other hand, I think MacArthur’s ministry broke the mold — and continues to do so — with dynamic, positive, effective, and unique services.
Posted by: Bob at April 29, 2006 06:49 AMMcArthur’s quote reminds me of one from a former teacher of mine, Mike Barrett, who once said, “Novelty in my field is not nifty.”
Posted by: Matthew Hoskinson at April 29, 2006 07:24 PMThank you, Matthew. I was wracking my brain last night! Something about not sacrificing exegesis on the altar of niftiness, and/or something about novelty not being a virtue in his field [theology]…but I couldn’t recall the exact words. I really need to resurrect those lecture notes.
Posted by: joy mc. at April 29, 2006 07:56 PMI’m glad you put the quote in context Bob.
I think if we honestly seek out what is Biblical Christianity and not just toe the party line we will be creative in key areas. Our creativity should stem from our Biblicalness (is that a word?). Our Biblicalness should not stem from our creativity.

Posted by: DGus at May 2, 2006 08:19 AMI smiled when MacArthur said that, Bob. Glad you caught it.
BTW, this came to my inbox today. I can’t take advantage of it, but I thought you might. I think what you’re looking for is upside-down letters, is it not?
Enjoyed meeting you & spending some time together!
