Quote of the Week
“Let ‘em sleep in the middle”
My wife heard this Billy Dean song, “Let Them Be Little”, while watching figure skating the other night and had me look it up. (OBVIOUSLY, I do not endorse Billy Dean, country music, or any of the other songs that Billy Dean sings (as far as I know). I even avoid driving through Nashville as much as possible in order to stay away from the unclean thing! Disclaimer finished.)
Anyway, back to the quote of the week in the Bixby home. “Let ‘em sleep in the middle” made us laugh because my wife and I horrify all the perfect parents in the world by letting our four-year-old daughter “sleep in the middle” every now and then. Just last night we all went to bed at 9:00 and for an hour listened to four-year-old wisdom as we stared up into the dark. We also enjoyed tickles, giggles, and kisses. I wonder why any parents would deny themselves the sweet memories that will surely last even after the children are grown because they occasionally “let ‘em sleep in the middle.”
P.S. I didn’t sleep well last night. . . But does it really matter?

I still snuggle up with my little one who is 23 years old. She doesn’t sleep in the middle any more, but I snuggle up with her, and give her kisses, and tell her how I love her all the time. Though she might not sleep in the middle anymore, our memories of the snuggles and kisses..will be ..there forever. Just one of those Mothers.
Posted by: deb at January 10, 2006 09:35 AMWith three kids “in the middle,” our bed can get pretty crowded… :)
Enjoy it while you can- they’re growing up fast!
(BTW- sorry if I’m making you overly “disclaimer sensitive.”)
Posted by: Greg Linscott at January 11, 2006 10:32 AMWhenever one of my daughters has a bad dream they will come into our room and climb into the bed. As a parent I love seeing how quickly they go from frightened and anxious to secure and peaceful when nestled between the two people that they trust more than anybody on this earth. Nothing has changed for them, except for the knowledge that we are there, and that’s enough to make them confident that everything will be just fine.
Posted by: Patrick at January 11, 2006 02:15 PMIt’s all because of you, Greg. My whole style is seriously cramped now!
Patrick, great observation. Don’t you wish we big people would relax as quickly in freshly revealed truth about God as our children do when they get “in the middle”? I do.
Posted by: Bob Bixby at January 11, 2006 02:30 PMHey, now—Greg gets all the credit for disclaimophobia? What am I, chopped liver?
And BTW, my friend, thanks for answering my previous questions in a straightforward manner. It grieves me that many YFs are going in for CCM, and I didn’t figure you for one of those, so when it seemed otherwise, I felt I should get clarification from you on the matter. Despite words betraying some strong feeling (now hopefully explained) about the matter, my questions were actually sincere.
Moreso than Dr. Tetreau assumed in his rather acerbic response, in which in his mind he had me lapsing into neo-orthodoxy.
Chris’comments were helpful in informing me about your penchant for sacred cow-kicking. Just watch your step out there.
{For those thoroughly confused: We are making reference to my “His Favorite Song” thread. It was the impetus for the overstated disclaimer on this post)
Yes, Joe, you get some of the credit too for the disclaimer, but I was still trying to place you. Now I know. Chris Anderson is your guru!
In defense of Joel (who was defending me), I don’t think he really thought you were lapsing into neo-orthodoxy. I think he was inserting a little facetious bite to test if, in fact, it was you that was acerbic. He wondered if you were genuinely interested or deliberately misconstruing my statement. I don’t really know if Joel is capable of being mean! He may prematurely label you as Type A or Type B, but he seems to me to be ecumenical when it comes to types!
Thanks for posting!
Posted by: Bob at January 12, 2006 10:42 AMActually I don’t know Chris—but he seems like a swell guy (a little Leave it to Beaver lingo there).
When I’m ready for a new guru, I’ll be sure to send him a resume!
Posted by: Joe Hansen at January 12, 2006 01:36 PMThe joke is on me then. For some reason I got the impression that you were Chris’ associate. I wonder if he has a Joe that works with him….. Anyway, sorry to mis-pigeon-hole you. Although, if you had to have a guru, Chris would be relatively safe!
I’d be glad to be your guru, but the first thing you would need to do is not make me paranoid about quoting people!! ;-)

My brother - pleasssssse - call me Joel - Dr. Tetreau is way more impressive than I deserve!
Forgive my comments - I was mostly having fun! Bob is right - I very much am ecuminical when it comes to Type A and Type B fundamentalists.
I would never really accuse you of neoorthodoxy -
deconstructionalist postmodern hermeneutics - Yes I fear your guilty there - but that hardly makes one “Barthy.”
(Joe - just kidding about the postmodern thing.)
God bless us everyone!
