Confessions of an MK
As is usual for me, toward the end of the year I begin perusing through old journals in order to induce myself into a frame of mind that produces healthy and strong resolutions for the next year. Here are the confessions (unaltered, unedited) of an 11-year-old Missionary kid in Central African Republic.
Nov. 11 Wes. 1981
Went to Darks for Prayer meeting. Philip has asthma. (Harris) and I do to so I know how he feels.
Started the first book by C.S. Lewis. It was a nice day. I must pray these prayer requests and expecially for Philip.
I was looking in for my new years resoulution, I saw I said I would read the Bible every day. I was doing good but when I went to Ippy I got thrown off. Iam reading II Sameul.
Timmy and I are going to start counting the days till school is out. He wants attantion so bad, because 3 of us are in school and he isn’t. So I am going to give him all the attantion I can give since I love my family with my heart.
Did alot of school, and didn’t get much of it done. I don’t know what Mom wants for Christmas so I can save up. I know Dad wants a hammer.
Our room is a mess (like usally). 2 more weeks till school is out!
I was just thinking I did not know how much I appreciate my friends I had in America, until I came to Africa. I would always sometimes come home and a hate and be in tears, cause I thought someone mistreated me, I know I was wrong, and am sorry.
Well, the letter I sent to Ed to tell him happy Birthday from the heart of Africa is not going to get there on time since his Birthday is on the 17th and I could not get stamps, so he is going to have it late. He was one of my best friends.
I started a stamp collection and have a stamp from: Mexico, Korea, and Africa, and America so I am only started.
Dec. 31, 1981
Daniel and I were playing “Boggle” when Dad came and said he would like to talk to me. We went into my bedroom and talked about How I would get along with Donna, anyway, we got to the subject of Connection between Me and Dad. After words I found him in his office. And I told him how much I appreciated his talk, and how much I wish he and I could look each other in the eye, and How I knew he wish we could too. But because his son is so stubborn. I love my Dad, and I thinke he is the greatest DAD in the World.
We are having a service. Right now we are reading something from our diary. I am having a neat time.

poignant and hilarious at the same time.
was ed ever your friend again after that late birthday card?
and are you sure it was timmy always wanting so much attention?
1981 was a good year for me. it was the year i got saved (the first time, anyway). =} i was five.
what a challenging reminder, though, that children are people, too. with eternal souls, with the responsibility to trust and obey, and with impressionable minds.
Posted by: joy at December 16, 2005 03:34 PM1981 was also a good year for me. I was saved July 9. Unlike a lot of people that are saved at an early age, I have never really had serious doubts about it( Praise the Lord!)
I do find it hard to believe that YOU were a stubborn child :-)
1981 was the first time I ever heard the gospel. I did not get saved until 6 years later, but it was the beginning of my exposure to the Word of God.
I was 13 years old when I first heard the gospel!

interesting post. That you was the year we got to know you and your family, my last year of grad school. Your family must have been on furlough the beginning of that year. Your folks had a great impact on our lives for missions those months in Greenville. We have now been serving in Brazil for 20 years, and our own kids are in grad school!

I remember you well! Thank you for posting.
It’s very generous of you to say that our family had an impact on you for missions. I think it might be more accurate to give the credit to my Dad and Mom! They were very busy at the time being missionaries not only to Africa, but to a small tribe of fair-headed heathens of which I was the chief. Since then the whole tribe has been converted and is to a person invested one way or another in the gospel ministry.
Glad to hear your tribe is doing well.
This makes me happy that I haven’t thrown away ALL of my old journals… An “expecially” refreshing post; thanks for sharing :o)
